“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.” – Romans 1:20

We often prefer to see ourselves as basically good people living in a broken world. We compare ourselves to others and think, “Well, I’m not that bad.” But God’s Word challenges this comfortable self-perception. The truth is much harder to accept. In Romans, Paul begins by addressing our universal human condition. Before he can share the good news of salvation, he must help us understand why we need saving in the first place. And that truth is uncomfortable: we are not good people experiencing a bad world. We are sinful people deserving God’s judgment. This is difficult to hear in a culture that celebrates self-affirmation. Yet understanding our true condition is essential to appreciating God’s grace. When we minimize our sin, we minimize our need for a Savior. We reduce Jesus to a helpful addition to our lives rather than our absolute necessity. God’s creation testifies to His eternal power and divine nature. The stars, mountains, oceans – all declare His glory. Yet despite this revelation, humanity has turned away. We’ve exchanged worship of the Creator for worship of created things. This exchange is the root of our condition, and its fruit is the brokenness we see everywhere. Recognizing this ugly truth isn’t meant to condemn us but to prepare us for the beautiful solution God provides. Only when we acknowledge our desperate need can we fully embrace His amazing grace.

Reflection
In what ways have you minimized your own sinfulness by comparing yourself to others rather than to God’s perfect standard?

Quote
The ugly truth is that there is nobody without excuse.

Prayer
Father, help me to see myself honestly, not through the lens of comparison with others, but through the truth of Your Word. Break down my pride and self-righteousness so I can fully appreciate Your grace. Thank You for loving me despite knowing everything about me. Amen.
