“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” – Matthew 5:14-16
What is the ultimate purpose of our lives? Is it personal happiness? Career success? Family legacy? While these things aren’t wrong, they fall short of our highest calling. Our greatest purpose is to live in such a way that others see our good works and glorify our Father in heaven. This shifts everything. It means our lives aren’t primarily about us at all—they’re about making God visible to a watching world. We are called to be light, illuminating the character and goodness of God through how we live, work, relate, and serve. As we mature in our faith, we experience a beautiful transformation. Our focus gradually shifts from self to others. Our questions change from “What can I get?” to “What can I give?” This isn’t a loss but a liberation—we find ourselves by forgetting ourselves in service to God and others. You may be the only representation of Jesus that someone in your workplace, neighborhood, or family ever sees. What story is your life telling them about who God is? When people encounter you, do they get a glimpse of His love, His grace, His generosity, His truth? Today, embrace this highest purpose: to live in such a way that God becomes more visible and more glorified through your ordinary, everyday life.
Reflection
How might your daily interactions and decisions change if your primary goal was to help others see and glorify God?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me to live for something bigger than myself. May my life shine with your light in such a way that others are drawn not to me but to you. Use me to make your love, grace, and truth visible in this world. For your glory, not mine. In Jesus’ name, amen.
