“Then Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.'” – Matthew 16:24-25

We often approach purpose like a treasure hunt—searching, striving, and strategizing to discover that elusive “thing” we’re meant to do. But what if finding our purpose isn’t primarily about searching but surrendering? Jesus gave us a profound paradox: to find our life, we must lose it. To discover our purpose, we must surrender our plans. This isn’t about giving up our dreams but about aligning them with something greater—God’s kingdom purposes. Purpose isn’t ultimately about self-fulfillment; it’s about self-surrender. It’s about saying no to ourselves so we can say yes to something greater. This is the pattern Jesus established. He didn’t come to be served but to serve, and He invites us into the same upside-down kingdom where greatness is measured by sacrifice. The beautiful truth is that when we chase Jesus instead of chasing purpose, His purpose finds us. As we draw near to Him, surrender our plans daily, and follow His example of service, we naturally fall into the rhythm of the purpose He’s designed for us. Today, instead of asking, “What is my purpose?” perhaps the better question is, “Jesus, how can I surrender more fully to you?” For it’s in that surrender that purpose is revealed.

Reflection
What areas of your life are you still trying to control rather than surrendering to God’s purpose and plan?

Quote
We will never fully discover our purpose until we fully surrender our lives.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, I surrender my plans, my ambitions, and my definition of success to you today. Help me to lose my life in service to you and others, trusting that in doing so, I’ll find the purpose you’ve designed for me. Give me courage to follow you even when it means denying myself. Amen.
