If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. – John 15:10-11
Many people view God’s commands as restrictive rules that limit freedom and enjoyment. This misconception keeps countless individuals from fully embracing a relationship with God. They fear that following Jesus means missing out on life’s pleasures. But Scripture paints a completely different picture. God’s commands aren’t meant to restrict us but to protect us. They’re not arbitrary rules but loving guidelines from a Father who wants the best for His children. When we obey God’s Word, we don’t experience less joy—we experience more. Think of it like the boundaries parents set for their children. They don’t establish rules to make their kids miserable but to keep them safe and help them flourish. Similarly, God’s commands are designed to lead us into the fullest, most abundant life possible. When we align our lives with His will, we discover a depth of joy that superficial pleasures can never provide. True freedom isn’t found in doing whatever we want but in becoming the people we were created to be.
Reflection
Is there an area of obedience you’ve been resisting because you fear missing out? How might this command actually be designed for your protection and joy?
Quote
I think for many people outside of Christianity, this is the part that they have problem with is I don’t want to follow Jesus because I don’t want to obey His Word. They think that in obeying God’s word then they’re going to miss out on something. What does the scripture say? That when we obey his commandments, we’re not missing out. He said, you will be filled with joy. Yes, overflowing joy.
Prayer
Father, forgive me for viewing Your commands as restrictions rather than expressions of Your love. Help me trust that Your ways lead to joy, not deprivation. Give me the courage to obey, even when it’s difficult. Amen.
