“But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved.” – Ephesians 2:4-5

There’s a profound difference between religious performance and genuine devotion. In ancient times, tearing one’s garments was a dramatic public display of remorse or grief. It was visible, impressive, and often performative. But God tells us through Joel to “rend your heart, not your garments.” God isn’t impressed by our religious theatrics. He doesn’t need our carefully choreographed spiritual performances or our public displays of piety. What He desires is the authentic surrender of our hearts. Many of us have been trained in religious performance – saying the right words, attending the right events, following the right rules. While these practices can be valuable, they can also become substitutes for genuine relationship with God. We can excel at the outward expressions while our hearts remain untouched. True devotion happens in the unseen places. It’s the quiet surrender of our will, the honest confession of our struggles, the genuine pursuit of God’s presence not for what He gives but for who He is. It’s less about what others see and more about the transformation happening within us. Today, God invites us to move beyond the drama of religious performance to the depth of heartfelt devotion. He’s not looking for perfection – He’s looking for authenticity.

Reflection
In what ways might you be substituting religious performance for genuine devotion in your relationship with God? What would it look like to shift from outward expressions to heart-level engagement?

Quote
God says, forget about your performance. Give me your heart. It’s not a call to drama. It’s a call to Devotion.

Prayer
God, I confess that sometimes I focus more on how my faith appears to others than on the condition of my heart before You. Thank You for desiring relationship over religion. Help me to tear down the walls of performance and approach You with genuine devotion. Transform me from the inside out. Amen.
