‘Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.’ – James 4:8
Have you ever noticed how things in your life can slowly fall apart without you realizing it? Maybe it’s your health, relationships, or even your spiritual life. The same thing happens with our spiritual altars – those sacred spaces where we meet with God. Throughout Scripture, altars represented places of worship, sacrifice, and divine encounters. They were where people connected with God in meaningful ways. But here’s the sobering truth: when our spiritual altars become neglected or broken, our lives begin to reflect that brokenness too. It’s not always dramatic or sudden. Sometimes it’s the slow drift of busyness, the comfort that makes us self-reliant, or simply allowing other priorities to quietly take God’s place. You might still believe in God, still consider yourself a Christian, but the daily connection, the intentional worship, the sacrificial living – it all starts to fade. The beautiful thing is that God never stops being faithful to His covenant with us, even when we drift. He’s always ready to help us rebuild what’s been broken.
Reflection
What areas of your spiritual life have you allowed to slowly drift or become neglected, and how might this be affecting other areas of your life?
Quote
Broken altars lead to broken lives.
Prayer
Lord, help me to honestly examine the condition of my spiritual altar. Show me where I’ve allowed neglect to creep in, and give me the desire to draw near to You again. Thank You for Your faithfulness even when I’ve been unfaithful.
