“A person is not a Jew who is one only outwardly, nor is circumcision merely outward and physical. No, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a person’s praise is not from other people, but from God.” – Romans 2:28-29

One of the most dangerous spiritual conditions isn’t outright rebellion against God—it’s the subtle deception of self-righteousness. This was the trap many religious people in Paul’s day fell into, and it remains a temptation for believers today. The religious leaders of Jesus’ time meticulously followed external rules while missing the heart of God’s law. They took pride in their heritage, their knowledge of Scripture, and their religious practices. Yet Jesus reserved His harshest words for these outwardly righteous individuals. In Romans, Paul addresses those who rely on religious identity and rule-following for their standing with God. He makes a profound statement: true circumcision is not outward and physical but inward—a matter of the heart. External religious observance without internal transformation is worthless. This applies directly to us. We might attend church regularly, know Bible verses, serve in ministries, and avoid obvious sins. But God looks beyond these external markers to examine our hearts. Do we secretly judge others while excusing our own sins? Do we follow religious practices out of genuine love for God or to impress others and feel superior? Self-righteousness is particularly dangerous because it blinds us to our need for grace. When we believe we’re “good enough” on our own merits, we miss the whole point of the gospel—that none of us can earn righteousness through our efforts. God isn’t impressed by our religious résumés. He desires hearts that are humble, broken, and utterly dependent on His grace.

Reflection
In what areas of your spiritual life might you be relying on external religious practices rather than allowing God to transform your heart?

Quote
It’s not just about the outward expression of our faith — church attendance,  I go to fall line church every single week. I was baptized there. But have our hearts  been transformed?

Prayer
Lord, search my heart and reveal any self-righteousness hiding there. I confess my tendency to judge others while excusing myself. Transform me from the inside out, not just changing my behavior but renewing my heart. May I never rely on religious performance but always on Your grace. Amen.
