You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water. – Psalm 63:1
Our culture celebrates busyness. We wear our packed schedules like badges of honor, rushing from one commitment to the next. But this constant hurry creates a spiritual problem—it leaves no room for God to speak or for us to listen. Spiritual growth requires margin. Just as plants need space to grow, our souls need unhurried moments to connect with God. When we’re constantly running, we miss the still, small voice of the Spirit. We might be physically present in church or during prayer time, but our minds are racing ahead to the next task. Slowing down isn’t laziness; it’s wisdom. It’s creating intentional space for God to work in our lives. This might mean setting boundaries around technology, learning to say no to good but unnecessary commitments, or establishing rhythms of Sabbath rest. When we slow down, we discover that God has been present all along—we were just moving too fast to notice Him.
Reflection
What is one source of hurry in your life that you could eliminate this week to create more space for God?
Quote
Hurry is the great enemy of the spiritual life in our day. You must ruthlessly eliminate hurry in your life. – Dallas Willard
Prayer
God, I confess that I’ve allowed busyness to crowd You out. Help me identify and eliminate unnecessary hurry from my life. Teach me to slow down enough to recognize Your presence and hear Your voice. Amen.
